Dollfie Dream Meetup in Niagara – September 20, 2014

This month we decided to take our doll meet to a completely different location! We tend to stick around Toronto, but we have lots of attendees that come from out of town so we decided to spend our day out in the Niagara region. We met up at the botanical gardens for a little picnic. This is the best time of year for fresh peaches, apples and other fruits and we purchased some from a local orchard.

What we underestimated was how windy it would be! Here are the dolls before girls started getting blown over, and huge tree branches started falling from the sky!

It was absurdly windy so I didn’t take very many photos. Does this look like PlasticFantastic’s Yuki and Rin are relaxing in the grass? Nope – the wind blew them over!

Dollfie Dream Meetup in Toronto – July 19, 2014

I’m so sorry for the lack of posts and updates! In addition to sorting out the mess from finishing up our renovation, my desktop computer died in mid-July >_<” I have had so many lovely photos from our doll meets and am only finally catching up on uploading them.

In mid-July we planned to meet up on the Toronto Islands for a lovely beach picnic, with special guest Otakusan167 visiting us too! However things don’t always go to plan. Otakusan167 had a family emergency so his travel plans changed and he wasn’t able to join us, and also the day turned out to be gray and rainy so we had to hide indoors at an alternate location. Luckily Marché is not too far away from the ferry terminal so we were able to regroup and meet there instead.

Despite the poor weather there was great turn-out and lots of beautiful dolls!

Hyper Japan Summer (July 27, 2014) in London, UK

A couple of years ago I attended the Hyper Japan Christmas event in London, England – and it just worked out that I was in town for the summer show this year! I met up with GabrielVH and MikeFoxtrot1985 at the venue to shop, eat, hang out and eat some more! Another friend that intended to come had asked me to wear a lolita dress, and it was a bit ambitious of me to bring a full lolita coordinate with me but I did it!

Here we are hanging out with Domo-kun at the NHK Japan booth.

Mike brought his lovely Mirai with him and she got lots of attention! We found this cute Arpakasso backpack for her at one of the vendor booths.

Gabe and I learned from how crowded it was last time and opted to not bring any dolls since it made shopping difficult @_@ I was quite pleasantly surprised that the hall they used this time had a lot more casual seating for guests to rest and relax. It was much more spacious and was properly air conditioned. This was one of the few days this summer that was nice and not, but I was practically melting in all my layers! After walking around we sat down in the food stalls area and I got some yakisoba noodles and takoyaki to snack on.

Gabi & Mirai Hang Out in Vancouver

I had a short layover in Vancouver earlier this week, but the timing worked out so that puppy52 and her hubby were able to meet up with me for breakfast! It was a short little meetup, but I brought Gabrielle (Volks DDS Akira) with me to visit.

We went out to a Hong Kong-style diner called Lido for breakfast. I really felt like I was transported back to Hong Kong – fast paced vibe, a bit noisy, fast and tasty food, and amazing pineapple buns (Bolor bao)! Since there was a lineup of customers, and the tables weren’t the cleanest (>__<“) we migrated over to the Aberdeen Centre before bringing out the dollies. Puppy52 brought her newest girl – the manual version of Smart Doll Mirai!

Mirai is the product of a lot of hard work and dreaming by Culture Japan founder Danny Choo. She’s similar to other 1:3 vinyl dolls on the market, but since Danny is also a collector himself, he took it upon himself to tweak certain things that he didn’t like with other dolls available on the market. Here she is standing next to Gabi, who is a Dollfie Dream Sister. You can see they are quite similar in height and overall proportion – well, except that Mirai has a lot more going on in the bust area! (She is wearing the optional Large bust).

I got to pose and play around with Mirai’s body, and the built-in telescopic stand that she comes with. It’s very handy and makes her very stable – so stable in fact that I decided to goof around a bit and be a bit daring! I remember reading a long time ago the Volks designed their DDS (or maybe it was the DD3?) body so that it was strong and stable enough to support the weight of another doll! I wanted to see if Mirai could do the same – and she can!

Alice and Yaya Go to the Park in London – June 29, 2014

I met up with my cousin, her boyfriend, as well as fransgaard and GabrielVH this past weekend for lazy Sunday dim-sum at Ping Pong. I was a bit late since my flight was delayed but the point of lazy Sunday is taking things at a very slow pace. (At one point our food was taking a bit too long, and after we inquired about it we were offered a round of complimentary drinks!) After lunch Gabe and I went for a walk to try to find the bus stop made entirely of LEGO in front of Hamley’s toy store.

It was quite cleverly done!

Since Gabe and I both had DD’s with us, we went out to a nearby park to take a few photos while there was still sunlight.

I love being able to see my London friends on my layovers 🙂 but on this particular visit I was bringing home a very special parcel. Here’s Alice helping me out with it. Can you guess what’s inside? ^_~”

Dollfie Dream Meetup at High Park, Toronto – June 21, 2014

Hi everyone! The weather has finally warmed up so last weekend a few of the Toronto Dollfie Dream owners had a low-key little doll meet at High Park. I love having our outdoor meetups since it usually means lots of lovely photos of the dolls since we can move around a bit! It feels like ages since I’d last seen everyone so I spent most of my time hanging around and socializing while AlphaZ was the one taking most of the photos this time. Nurlindae knew of a great little spot in the park that was out of the way and perfect for us to settled down and be out of the way of prying eyes. The theme of this meet was “summer” – which basically meant anything goes! ^__~”

Since I’m still dealing with the mess from my renovation I only brought 2 girls with me – Alice and Gabi and I dressed them in pretty summery dresses

花見 ~ Hanami 2014 – Part 2

Hanami literally means “flower viewing” and although it traditionally applies to the spring viewing of cherry blossoms (sakura), it can also apply to plum blossoms (ume) or other flowering trees in the springtime. I had hoped to visit High Park again this year, but this past winter was one of the coldest I’ve ever experienced in Toronto! As a result, the trees bloomed very late this year and the blossoms didn’t last for long.

A couple weeks ago, I went on an early morning outing to the park with AlphaZ, Machiko and LiterallyTony in the hopes of glimpsing some of the sakura blossoms.
IMG_6545

Due to recent rain, most had already fallen off the trees, and many of the blossoms had already turned to green leaves. >_<”
IMG_6517

Even though most of the sakura had already fallen, it was still nice to wander through the park in the early morning hours. It was very peaceful – mostly other early-bird photographers wandering about, since any families planning lunchtime picnics were still at home :3

My favourite spot is down by the water where the willow trees are.

Once the sun started coming out the lighting was very harsh and it was harder to take nice photographs >_<”
IMG_6694

We wandered the park a little bit looking for nice spots that weren’t too sunny and found this gorgeous flowering magnolia tree! Isn’t it stunning?
IMG_6750

There are some beautiful flowering tress in front of my house, but they were at their best last weekend while I was away at Anime North. Here are a few previously unpublished photos from last spring of Moe out in front of the house enjoying the pretty blossoms.

I was pretty bummed that we weren’t able to organize a doll meet at High Park this year, but between snow, rain, and working it was difficult to get everyone together. I’m glad that I was able to capture a few sakura photos, even if they weren’t as spectacular as last year.

花見 ~ Hanami 2014 – Part 1

(Note – May 30, 2014: I realized that this post has been in “Draft” format for over a year! Ooops! Since the weather was so poor this spring, maybe it was a good thing I delayed this post since I feel like I missed out on springtime this year. Enjoy these lovely photos!)

Hanami literally means “flower viewing” and although it traditionally applies to the spring viewing of cherry blossoms (sakura), it can also apply to plum blossoms (ume) or other flowering trees in the springtime. I had hoped to visit High Park this year, but alas this past winter was one of the coldest on record! The trees bloomed very late this year and didn’t last for long. Instead, I’m sharing these previously unseen photos from when PlasticFantastic and Sam came over to my house to hang out last spring, and we took some lovely photos with the flowering trees around my house during periods when the sun peeked out.

Here are Serena, Rin and Mio wearing in beautiful wa-loli dresses! Wa-loli is a genre of lolita fashion that combines traditional Japanese clothing styles with lolita elements.

Draping sleeves typical to kimono and yukata, an obi and a poofy skirt with a petticoat worn underneath are common in wa-loli style.

Sorry for the lack of posts! Quick life update @__@”

Hi everyone! It’s been a long time since I’ve written any posts and I want to assure you all that I haven’t disappeared! AlphaZ and I started a huge renovation project earlier this month to re-design our room so that we’ll be more comfortable and have more space to display our beautiful collection of figures and dolls. (This is a personal blog post, so if you’re only interested in dollies, you can stop here and check back in a few days ^__^)

Demolition officially started May 2, but our contractor was still committed to working at another site that was an outdoor project – so his team only came to our house when there was in-climate weather and he didn’t start work full-time at our house until about 2 weeks ago. It was a horrible task packing up everything and in the meantime most of our house looks like a hoarders den >__<”

Renovation

During the first few days of demolition we learned some interesting things about our room. The previous owners had slapped up some cheap wood paneling to cover up damage, and a very inefficient closet had been built (which is what the long space is in the photo above). Two of our walls had no insulation whatsoever, which explained the heat loss in the winter time and why it was so noisy when people walked up the stairs outside – you can see the bare brick wall below. Also, there was linoleum under the carpet @__@”

Here’s everything stripped down to the bare wood frames:

Dollfie Dream Monthly Meetup in Toronto – March 22, 2014

Even though AlphaZ was able to attend the January Dollfie Dream meetup in Toronto, it feels like I haven’t been at one in ages @__@” I’ve missed seeing everyone and their pretty dolls! Since the weather is still bitterly cold and gross we met at Go For Tea in Markham. The theme for this month’s meetup was “Spring, please come soon!” since March has almost finished and it is still snowy and cold. Most of the girls were dressed in hoodies, sweaters and other cute casual wear and some colourful chicks added a bit of colour to the group!

Rin & Serena attend Volks USA’s Showroom Closing Event & Tea Party

This weekend was the final one that the Volks USA Tenshi-no-Sumika would be open to the public before closing it’s doors indefinitely. AlphaZ enjoyed his visit in early February so much that he was determined to go back one last time. On Saturday there was a discount sale, as well as the opportunity to purchase some of the showroom’s display dolls at the “Dollfie Orphanage.” I arrived with our aunt around 10am and we drew numbers out of a box to determine what order we would enter the line – I got #96, and there were about 160 people in line by the time the shop opened. I met Obiwanivan and JoltFiend while we were waiting around for the store to open.

Chilling with @innocentsake & @JoltFiend today!

Welcome Home Super Dollfie Ryo!

This weekend when I was at the Volks USA showroom for their final weekend events, I noticed this dapper young boy sitting amid the dolls in the Dollfie Orphanage and his big blue eyes caught my attention. He is a discontinued standard model – Super Dollfie Ryo (凌). I didn’t go into the store event expecting to come home with anything but he looked so polite, shy and oddly familiar that I decided on the spot to adopt him. When I was chatting with my sister about him afterwards, it’s no wonder that he looked familiar – his headmold is the F-11, which is “Nono.”
IMG_6407

His headplate says 05.05 so he is an older doll, and his face was painted to look like the pictures in his paperwork. Many of his seams have been sanded and he is in very good condition considering his age! That is what I love about collecting Volks resin dolls – I know that even as they age they will look beautiful. He came “as-is” with the wig, outfit and boots you see here. The outfit is quite special since it is from the 2011 Full Choice System release and I love the boots (they are similar to another pair I already own!).

Mini Meet with Puppy52 in Vancouver – March 1, 2014

I brought my newest girl, Alice Kuonji, with me to Vancouver for a short lunch-time meetup with puppy52. We met up at the Aberdeen Centre in Richmond for food and then took a few photos with the dolls. She brought Aki, Taiga and Ebisu.

Rin & Serena Visit Volks Tenshi-no-Sato in Kyoto

One of the highlights of my trip to Japan in October was having the chance to visit the Volks Tenshi-no-Sato showroom in Kyoto. It is their gorgeous flagship location and an absolute must for any Volks doll collector. Admission is free, however reservations must be made in advance by simply emailing Volks. The staff at the store had no record of our reservation, but luckily AlphaZ had a copy of the confirmation email saved on his phone! (For future visitors, I recommend printing out a copy of your reservation just in case!) It was actually quite easy to get to Tenshi-no-Sato from the train station, however I found this guide on Angelden.net to be very helpful.

Volks Tenshi-no-Sato, Kyoto

Unlike other Volks showrooms that also carry their hobby kits (model airplanes), Tenshi-no-Sato is dedicated only to dolls and the special relationship that owners have with them.

After unpacking, we left our bags with the staff and borrowed a lovely basket to carry our dolls in during our visit.

There are indoor photo areas, but the true gem is the Japanese garden outside. Since the weather was beautiful and sunny we went outside to take advantages of the beautiful garden.
